Clean Energy Connect and Google signed
Virtual Power Purchase Agreement with additionality
through low-voltage distributed PPA service scheme

Clean Energy Connect, Inc. (Teppei Uchida, CEO, hereinafter referred to as “CEC”), which provides decarbonization solutions, collaborating with ITOCHU Corporation (Keita Ishii, President and COO) has concluded a virtual Power Purchase Agreement (hereinafter referred to as “PPA”) with Google to provide long-term environmental value from renewable energy with additionality (*1).

In this initiative, CEC will develop a Google-exclusive non-FIT low-voltage solar power plant with a capacity of approximately 72MW-DC (40MW-AC, approximately 800 power plants) in Japan by September 2026, and will provide the long-term environmental value from those renewable energy with additionality. Specifically, the environmental value will be provided mainly at a data center owned and operated by Google in Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture.

When concluding and announcing the virtual PPA with CEC, Shinji Okuyama, Vice President of Google Japan, said “We have set an ambitious 2030 goal to run on 24/7 carbon-free energy on every grid where we operate and this power purchase agreement brings us one step closer to achieving it. Through this project we are enabling an aggregated network of small-scale-solar plants across multiple grid regions to support our Inzai Data Center and our growth in Japan.”

In addition, the Non-FIT low-voltage solar power plant to be developed in this project will be equipped with a “Emergency Outlet for Our Neighbors”(*2). CEC are contributing to improve the resilience of the regions where power plants are located and will continue to advance concrete and effective initiatives with the aim of realizing a sustainable carbon-free society.

CEC will keep providing speedy and flexible one-stop decarbonization solutions for customers such as RE100 participating companies and other companies aiming for decarbonized operation, from planning and supporting execution of optimal green power introduction plans, to verification of effects after implementation and goal achievement. In addition, in the future, CEC will combine solar power generation with storage batteries, wind power generation, etc. to improve the utilization rate of renewable energy towards 24/7 carbon-free energy. By continuously providing cutting-edge green power solutions to achieve our customer’s decarbonization goal, we will realize effective initiatives to resolve climate change issues.

*1 “Additionality” means direct contribution to an increase of the total amount of renewable energy power generation by development of new renewable energy power sources.
*2  “Emergency Outlet for Our Neighbors” is emergency power outlet. In the PPA service, when a power outage occurs due to a disaster in the area where a solar power plant is installed, local residents living around the power plant can use electricity generated from the plant.
